My Problems Installing "Terminal Server Manager" on Alpha

I encountered a catch-22 situation while installing TSM on my AlphaServer-DS20E. Please note that
this might not happen to you if you've got different network adapters on your system. - TSM-2.1 installed OK with default options but naturally can't be used because it appears to only support VAX network adapters.
- Installing the version 7 patch (which transforms TSM-2.1 into TSM-2.1-07 ) didn't change things for me but I must also mention that one of the "post install" tests failed. A kind soul pointed out that the TSM-2.1-07 release notes explain how logical name TSM$SERVICE_CIRCUITS is used to extend network adapter list. When I couldn't find this logical-name in my documentation I fired up the TSM application and noticed the old version number. This was when I realized that all the new stuff was being removed during "an unannounced rollback" that happens whenever any of the post install tests fail.
- My problem was best solved by skipping the last "post install" test so the TSM-2.1-07 executable and new release notes remain on the system.
- Note that TSM is available for free download from the HP OpenVMS website. This retired program may be your only hope if you need to support older (non I/P based) terminal servers. In my case, I need to maintain twenty RGATE servers manufactured by Able Communications; these machines are DS500 clones which have uPDP-11 internals except that a Blue-Gate interface replaces the async lines.

Downloading TSM
For some reason the OpenVMS folks at HP have removed the "Digital Networks" archive.Currently (2005-10-29) TSM can only be found on OpenVMS freeware CD #6 available here
